Why it worked

Several factors contributed to the success of our outreach at the Taste of Soul Family Festival. Our collaboration with great partners provided outstanding staff support and tremendous volunteer participation. We were also fortunate to have several supporters donate incentives that helped us attract people to our booth and created opportunities to engage them in meaningful conversations about lung cancer awareness and screening. One supporter donated three flat-screen televisions, two 32-inch TVs and one 55-inch TV, which were used along with 500 T-shirts as incentives. Another supporter donated 200 autographed children's books, signed by the author. In addition, the DECIPHeR project donated 300 swag bags for distribution. These incentives helped bring people to our booth, but more importantly, it opened the door for conversations about lung cancer, screening eligibility, early detection, and the impact lung cancer is having on our community.

"I had no idea that lung cancer was killing our community like that. I always thought breast cancer was the greatest cancer concern for women and prostate cancer was the greatest concern for men."

Providence Hospital (cultural lung cancer screening brochure)

Why it worked

Being there as a community member and having the cultural lung cancer screening brochure I did with Providence Hospital.

"One woman stopped by our table and shared that her sister, who lives in the Los Angeles area far from her Tribal community, had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. She appreciated seeing culturally relevant Tribal lung cancer materials and took several brochures to share with her sister, helping bring trusted, culturally responsive information to a relative far from home."

Why it worked

Event and location provided a strong setting for outreach.

"Someone stopped by the booth and shared their story that their loved one had lung cancer not once but twice but because of clinical trials is a survivor."
